Beam Me Up Science Fiction Book Group

The Beam Me Up group is a band of book lovers who enjoy reading and arguing over the speculative (science fiction, fantasy) genres.  The group was founded in 1999 by Eileen Duffy in honor of her sadly closed bookstore, Beam Me Up, Watson Books, which featured sf, fantasy, and mystery works and associated cultural artifacts.  Given a first home by Marina Cramer, bookseller and friend extraordinaire, at her bookstore, Cup and Chaucer, the Beamers began a tradition of lively monthly discussion and dispute that survives after Marina brought us to Watchung Booksellers.  The group is open to mature readers of all ages and takes a flexible approach to the limits of its favorite genres, willing to look at mainstream writers experimenting with genre themes as well as genre authors who push the boundaries and cross over between and among genres and mainstream fiction.  The only requirement for membership is a willingness to give an honest opinion and to explain how and why that opinion was formed.  It may sound demanding, but Beamer members are always ready to help out with their own thoughts and questions to keep the discussion moving, often in surprising directions that branch away from the book itself.  We believe that there is no book, be it good or bad, happy or sad, that cannot provide us with some stimulating conversation and a few laughs.
