Sniff and you can almost smell the legendary fragrance of Chanel no.5. This book kept me wonderful company through a cold, gray day by the fire. Even without the added bonus of featuring two creative icons of the twentieth century, the gorgeous and descriptive writing, poetic with just the right touch of soap-opera drama, and the force of this passionate and mysterious romance will keep the reader turning pages until the last note has been played.

I admit it. I picked it up because the cover is pretty. I absolutely loved March, Brook's beautiful, inventive narrative about what happened to the Little Womens' dad during his absence. I was not prepared for the quick-moving, almost Dan Brown-style action I found in People of the Book - think DaVinci Code written by a glorious, haunting writer and Pulitzer Prize winner. The narrative is beautifully built, traversing the ages and illuminating the story of a people through the mystery of a stunning haggadah. Mystery, academia, with a touch of passionate, cross cultural romance... what more can you ask for?

Another thoroughly entertaining treatise on the ways we understand events and look at the world. It will have you shaking your head, laughing and crying all at the same time. One thing is for sure, though... you'll never look at the world the same way again.

I challenge anyone who can wait for this to come out in paperback... Work every single hardcover penny, just like it's predecessor. This sequal to The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo lives up and perhaps even exceeds the fast-paced excitement of the first installment. It brings back the coolest heroine in recent literature, Lisbeth Salander, and once again leaves us pining for the next book. Best mysteries I've read in years, hands down.

This book represents, for me, a very graceful combination of two
of my favorite genres, science fiction and the classic romance. I
love its graceful prose and beautiful imagery, all of which bring a
very human touch to what is a truly compelling sci-fi concept. Even
through the changes in chronology and point of view, the main thread of
this beautiful story is a constant we can all relate to: the immense
joys of finding the person you love above all else and the enormous
challenges of making a life and a home with them. I recommend this
book wholeheartedly!

I absolutely love a good mystery. I also love a well-written and thoughtfully crafted book. This book is both. It is a gorgeous page-turner with a female lead who is the definition of cool and a fascinating, sexy and deeply flawed hero. The characteristic dry, almost flat prose of the Swedish translation comes through here and almost becomes another character in the story. It is a bit slow to get truly going but more than worth the wait.

I read this book when I was pregnant with my first child and it truly brought me to my knees. It is an absolutely wrenching and brutally honest testament of the immensity of a mother's love and the sorrow of a mother's loss. I've read many early works by Allende, most of them in Spanish, but this is, to me, where she puts her lyrical prose to its best use - when describing her own personal history, her family and friends and the joy as well as the enormous, almost insurmountable sadness of sharing her daughter's short life. This book moved and changed me immensely.
